Naming Your Country
To my friends who live south of the border: I don’t want to insult you but I’m afraid I might. I really think that you need to come up with a name for your country. “United States of America” is not really a name. It’s more of a description. And you can’t really call yourselves “Americans” because technically, anyone in the western hemisphere could call themselves that. I’m sorry if I’ve offended you. I think it would just enhance your country if you had a real name. Any ideas???

How about Daddy? We could be original and call it New something or another. Or we could call it Washington or Jefferson or something (yeah, right) but that is how Israel got it's name--from a guy's name. Other nations in the Middle East had their names given to them by the Brits during colonization (or rather--a lot of the world did during that time, England, France, Spain, etc. after kings). OR, since we are all up in the capitalism here, we could let the nation be bid on by companies to name the country. Think Microsoft Republic, Googlistan, or America by The Home Depot!! Other nations end in -istan (Kurdistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, which means land of. Similar to those nations that end in -land. Let's see--Greenland and Iceland were named to fool others into not going to the right island by the Vikings. We could call it New Canada (we wouldn't have to worry about the immigration problem ever again! who would want to go to new Canada??) I hope I'm not offending any Canadians, or should I say, Villagers ;-) Honestly--just having fun...but do you think we could call our whole nation Hollywood? or how about The Melting Pot? Ignoramousland? So many possibilities!
And for the record--I think United States of America is a fine name. We don't have a king, so it's a good name. With meaning--united...states...very democratic. And so is Canada.
hehehe..true, Barry!
Also--an interesting note in reference to the United States. If you simply type it in wrong (which I did in the Letterhead of a paper I wrote at the Academy) it is Untied States. Won't even pop up on spell check.
Barry,
It appears all this pensive stewing on the difference between Americans and Canadians is infact starting to sharpen your ability to see things for what they really are :) Good for you for calling things as you see 'em.. I am starting to think I'm American for not being able to come up with an original thought - BURN!!!
